Temporary Veneers Aftercare: How to Care for Your Trial Smile at Alba Dental Clinic

Congratulations on completing your first step — your trial smile. This stage is an exciting part of the journey because it allows you (and your family) to visualise what your final smile can look like before we even begin making your porcelain veneers.

Right now, you have a set of temporary veneers. These temporaries are intentionally designed for short-term wear, which means they are weaker and less durable than your final porcelain veneers.

Below are the key aftercare points to help your temporary veneers last comfortably over the next 2–3 weeks until your next appointment.

1) Avoid Staining Foods and Drinks

Temporary veneers can stain over time, so it’s best to avoid anything that would stain a white T-shirt.

Try to limit or avoid:

  • Coffee
  • Colored juice
  • Red wine
  • Dark sauces and strongly coloured foods (e.g., curry)

Safer options that are less likely to stain include:

  • White or clear drinks (e.g., white wine, apple juice)
  • Light-coloured foods (e.g., spaghetti carbonara)

If you do consume something that stains (for example, green curry), don’t panic. Simply give us a call — we can polish your temporary veneers, and it usually takes 20-30 minutes.

2) Mild Gum Discomfort Can Be Normal

Because we have worked on your teeth and gums (especially if gum lifting was done), you may experience slight gum discomfort.

This is usually temporary and may last anywhere from 1 day up to 5 days, depending on how much work was done.

During this healing period, you may consider:

  • Panadol or Ibuprofen (as needed and as directed)
  • Warm salt water rinses (warm salty water can help soothe gum aches and support healing)

3) Temporary Tooth Sensitivity Is Expected

It is common for teeth to feel slightly sensitive during this stage.

This can happen because:

  • Your teeth have been prepared
  • Temporary veneers are thinner
  • Hot/cold from food and even air can transmit more easily to the underlying tooth structure

If you notice sensitivity, do not panic — it is usually temporary.

4) If a Temporary Veneer Chips or Comes Off

Because temporary veneers are not the strongest material, they can sometimes chip or come off.

If this happens:

  • Please call us and we will arrange for you to come in as soon as possible
  • Replacing or re-attaching a temporary veneer is usually straightforward and typically takes 20-30 minutes.

5) When to Contact Us Urgently

Mild discomfort and sensitivity are normal. However, if you notice that pain or discomfort:

  • Becomes worse over time
  • Starts to ache or throb
  • Intensifies over the next 5 days to 2 weeks

Please contact us. This may indicate something else needs to be assessed, and we would want to review you promptly.

6) Bite Adjustments After Numbness Wears Off

Because you may still be numb today, your bite can feel different — and it can be harder to detect and adjust high spots accurately.

If your bite feels “high” or uneven:

  • We will re-check and adjust your bite at your review appointment (often the next day)
  • Not adjusting high spots can put unnecessary pressure on the teeth, so it’s important we fine-tune this once you’re no longer numb

7) Smile Design Feedback: Why Tomorrow Matters

Because you are still numb today, we usually avoid making major design adjustments immediately — adjustments made while numb can be inaccurate.

That is why your review appointment (often the next day) is important:

  • You’ll have time to see your new smile in different lighting
  • You can show friends and family and note how you feel about the size, shape, and overall design
  • You can share feedback, and we can do fine-tuning if needed

Today is not the final result — tomorrow is where we refine and perfect the design together.

In Summary

  • Your temporary veneers are part of your trial smile and help you preview your final porcelain veneers before they are made.
  • Temporaries are weaker than final veneers, so avoid hard, sticky foods and take extra care.
  • Temporary veneers can stain — avoid dark foods/drinks where possible; polishing can be done quickly if staining happens.
  • Mild gum discomfort (1–5 days) and temporary tooth sensitivity are common; warm salt rinses and mild pain relief may help.
  • If a temporary veneer chips or falls off, contact the clinic — it’s usually quick to fix (20-30 minutes).
  • If pain worsens or becomes throbbing over the next 5 days to 2 weeks, contact us for review.
  • Bite and smile design adjustments are best done once numbness wears off — your next-day review is where fine-tuning happens.
