Dental Filling Aftercare: What to Expect After Your Filling Treatment

Congratulations on completing your dental fillings.

After a filling procedure, there are a few important aftercare points to remember — including what is normal to feel, and when you should contact the clinic for review.

Tooth Sensitivity After Fillings Is Common

It is normal to experience some sensitivity after fillings, especially for the first few days. In some cases, sensitivity can last up to 3 to 4 weeks.

This happens because when we remove the infected material and place filling material onto the tooth, the dentine can become slightly irritated — and this is a normal response.

You may notice:

  • Sensitivity to hot and cold
  • General discomfort when eating or chewing

In many cases, this improves gradually over time.

When Pain Is Not Normal

If your discomfort becomes worse over the next 3 to 4 days, and you start to feel dull, throbbing aches, please contact us immediately.

This can be a sign of two possible issues:

A) A “High Spot” on the Filling

This means a portion of the filling is slightly higher than your natural bite, causing the tooth to take too much pressure when you chew.

B) The Tooth Nerve May Be Affected

In some cases, the nerve can become inflamed after a filling, and you may require further treatment such as a root canal, depending on symptoms and clinical findings.

It is sometimes unpredictable which teeth will need root canal treatment and which won’t. Occasionally, even small fillings can lead to nerve symptoms later. On the other hand, some very large fillings can remain stable for 5 to 10 years without needing root canal treatment.

That’s why if pain is escalating, it’s important to let us know early so we can assess and guide you properly.

If Your Bite Feels “Off” or Too High

When you leave the clinic, you may still be numb. Because of that, we are about 95% confident your bite has been checked and is accurate — but there is still a small chance your bite may feel different once the numbness wears off.

If over the next few days you notice that:

  • You are hitting one or two teeth more than the rest
  • The tooth feels “high” when biting
  • Chewing feels uncomfortable or uneven

Please return for a bite adjustment. You do not want to keep chewing on an uneven bite, as it can irritate the tooth and cause ongoing discomfort.

How Long Do Fillings Last — and When Might a Crown Be Needed?

Fillings are designed to last a long time. However, if a filling is very large, a more definitive option such as a crown may be recommended.

Large fillings can sometimes:

  • Break more easily
  • Crumble compared to smaller fillings

If you have a large filling (or multiple fillings on the same tooth), it’s worth discussing with your dentist what the most permanent solution should be. In some cases, a filling is sufficient — and in others, a crown, onlay or inlay may be the more ideal long-term option.

In Summary

  • Mild sensitivity after a filling is normal and can last a few days, sometimes up to 3–4 weeks.
  • Sensitivity to hot/cold or mild chewing discomfort can be expected as the tooth adjusts.
  • If pain worsens after 3–4 days or becomes dull and throbbing, contact the clinic — it may be a high spot or nerve-related symptoms needing review.
  • Rough spots may settle on their own, but persistent roughness can be polished easily.
  • If your bite feels high or uneven after numbness wears off, return for a quick adjustment to avoid trauma to the tooth.
  • Very large fillings may require a crown in the future for better long-term strength and stability.
