Tooth-Coloured & Porcelain Fillings
Many people these days are conscious of their oral health and the effect it has on their general wellbeing. Traditionally, metal amalgam (mercury) was the only material of choice for people suffering from dental decay and cavities in need of a dental filling. Concerns have been raised about the use of dental amalgam because it contains mercury. There is an ongoing controversy as to whether having mercury fillings in our mouth poses any risk.
Depending on your opinion you may opt to have tooth coloured dental fillings instead.

We strive to provide the finest and safest options for our patients and choose to be a mercury-free dental practice. Get in touch today to enquire more about mercury versus tooth-coloured fillings.

Dental Fillings Materials
Porcelain Dental Fillings
Dental porcelain has properties similar to tooth enamel. It is a tooth coloured substance that is partly translucent, that absorbs and reflects light to mimic the properties of a pearly white shine.
A porcelain inlay or onlay, on occasion, has superior properties over that of a traditional dental filling.
With the advancement in dental technology, there are many other alternatives to amalgam such as direct composite (tooth coloured) dental fillings, and indirect porcelain fillings (Inlays/ Onlays).
Composite resin
Composite resin is a tooth-coloured or white filling material. Dentists can use it for fillings in both the front and back teeth.
Dentists glue composite fillings to the surface of the tooth. This is called bonding. Because composite resin is glued to the tooth’s surface, dentists don’t need to cut away as much tooth structure to fix teeth with composite fillings.
The colour of the material can be matched to the colour of the tooth being fixed. People may not be able to see the filling if the colour is matched to your tooth well.

What are dental fillings?
Dental fillings are restorative materials used to repair teeth affected by cavities, fractures, or wear. The procedure involves the removal of decayed or damaged tooth structure, followed by the placement of a filling material to restore function, integrity, and morphology.

At Alba, our common filling materials include composite resin, porcelain, and GIC, each selected based on clinical needs, aesthetics, and durability. Properly placed fillings help prevent further decay and maintain overall oral health. We advise that regular dental check-ups and good oral hygiene are essential in maximizing the lifespan of fillings and overall dental well-being.
Frequently asked Restoration questions
What Types Of Materials Are Used For Dental Fillings?
We primarily use composite resin (tooth-colored) fillings that blend naturally with your teeth. These modern materials are durable, safe, and aesthetically pleasing. Traditional amalgam (silver) fillings are also available when appropriate for specific situations.
How Long Do Dental Fillings Last?
With proper care, composite fillings typically last 5-10 years, while amalgam fillings can last 10-15 years. Longevity depends on factors like the size of the filling, location, oral hygiene habits, and dietary choices. Regular check-ups help monitor your fillings’ condition.
Is Dental Filling Procedure Painful?
No, the procedure is performed under local anesthesia, ensuring you feel no pain during treatment. Once the anesthesia wears off, you might experience mild sensitivity for a few days, which is completely normal and manageable.
How Long Does It Take To Get A Dental Filling?
A typical filling procedure takes 30-60 minutes, depending on the size and location of the cavity. Composite fillings are completed in a single visit, allowing you to return to your normal activities immediately.
Can I Eat Or Drink After Getting A Dental Filling?
Yes, you can eat and drink once the anesthesia wears off completely. With composite fillings, they’re fully hardened before you leave our office. However, we recommend waiting a few hours before eating and avoiding very hot or cold foods initially.
Will My Dental Filling Look Natural?
Yes, modern composite fillings are color-matched to your natural tooth shade and virtually invisible once placed. We carefully shape and polish the filling to ensure it blends seamlessly with your tooth structure, maintaining your smile’s natural appearance.
